The Other Boleyn Girl

Some critics are blasting this period piece.  I really enjoyed it.  Beautiful clothes, grand sets, fine acting – and a good-looking Henry! (Eric Bana).  I also liked it because, unlike some of those overly complicated and convoluted period films, this one was incredibly easy to follow.  I wasn’t constantly whispering to my husband,”Who the heck is he again?”  “What did she just say?”  I was able to sit back and enjoy myself.  A tragic tale though, nonetheless.  As a cradle Episcopalian, I have a bit of unease regarding the circumstances of the birth of the Anglican Church.

Horton Hears a Who!

What a great movie!  The whole family loved it.  Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Carol Burnett were super.  The original Dr. Seuss story was embellished, of course, for the 90-minute movie – but not too much, just enough.  It didn’t go over the top, thank goodness.  My kids fell head-over-heels in love with the Mayor of Whoville’s son, JoJo (emo teenager).  See it on the big screen so you can be amazed at the advancements in computer-generated animation.  Water and fur look absolutely like the real thing, I kid you not.  We watched all the credits roll – and there was a “Fur Supervisor.”  What a cool job.  Go see it and take some kids with you.

Mrs. Pettigrew Lives for a Day

♥♥??

I’m sure that this film is perfectly delightful; however, I fell asleep.  I see about 50-75 theater movies each year and I’ve NEVER fallen asleep before……

From what I did see, I think perhaps Frances McDormand was miscast.  Perhaps Julie Walters or Brenda Blethyn would have been better choices.  I don’t know why these people didn’t consult with me first.

This film is a quirky fable about a cursed, pig-faced girl (Christina Ricci) who needs to be accepted “by her own kind” (ie – married to a blue blood) in order to end the curse (the piggy face & piggy ears).  I LOVED THIS MOVIE—it was fun, whimsical and endearing.  The unnamed city was really cool, Penelope’s unusual clothes were really cool – and her suite in the family mansion was the coolest.  My three movie companions (ages 18, 12 & 11) were on the edges of their seats.  (One was literally on the edge of her seat; she has red hair and is prone to getting overly involved with the fate of characters on the big screen).  The film also stars James McAvoy, Catherine O’Hara (love her), Peter Dinklage (helllllooo– remember The Station Agent?) and a cameo by Reese Witherspoon.  Some critics are really panning this movie.  They’re cynical losers – the whole lot of ’em.  Go see this movie – and take someone young (or young at heart) with you.

Starting Out in the Evening

This subtle, nuanced, intelligent film is about a determined grad student who convinces an aging novelist that her thesis will revive his career.  The film did not insult me; it allowed me to draw my own conclusions involving motivation, love, family, redemption—and one particular character’s complete & utter moral depravity (that’s MY opinion).  A low budget indie film shot in NYC – great actors and great acting.  I strongly recommend.  Starring Frank Langella, Lili Taylor and Lauren Ambrose.
