WALL-E

Pixar’s latest is one of its greatest.  The whole family went to an opening “day” screening (at 12:01 AM).  Yes, we are nuts, I know.  I thought our soon-to-be 13-year old would be the youngest in the sold-out gamer/geek/Pixar-lovin’-filled theater–but there were a couple of kids around 10 years old.  What a GREAT movie – with an important, non-preachy message.  We exclaimed “Aaaah!” and “Ooooh!” so many times that I lost count.  My husband agreed to come along on our midnight-2am adventure, but announced that he’d probably take a snooze during the movie.  Ha!  He didn’t even blink for the entire 1-hour & 43 minutes.  However, he wasn’t quite as animated as our 18-year old (who is Pixar obsessed) – she was literally bouncing in her seat during the whole screening.  A must-see on the big screen.

Spoof of spy films of the 1950’s and 60’s.  Very authentic clothes, sets & cinematography.  Enjoyable but EXTREMELY SILLY.  Very French.  Oui, oui.

Not too bad!  Good to see on the big screen.  If you’re a fan of Indie, you’ll enjoy this film.  Cate Blanchett is wonderful as the evil Nazi.  Shia LeBeouf and Karen Allen – also very good.

The Happening

Man, oh man.  I really wanted to like this movie.  I wanted to PROVE that those conspiring, no-good critics just want to give my man M. Night Shyamalan a hard time.  The critics have been overly harsh to Mr. Shyamalan in the past.  Not this time.  The criticism is deserved.  This film was poorly acted (hellloooooo—Mark Wahlberg is usually a terrific actor).  The acting was so bad I cringed.  The dialog was horrible and stilted.  Even the editing was amateurish.  And the side story with Betty Buckley’s creepy character “Mrs. Jones” was completely unnecessary and did nothing to advance the plot (however, Buckley was the ONLY one in the movie who could act; her role was convincing indeed.)  This film was extremely self-indulgent on Mr. Shyamalan’s part.  He must have himself surrounded by a bunch of yes-men (like Michael Jackson and Britney Spears).  SOMEONE should have said – “With some tweaking, the premise of the film can work, but the execution is absolute CRAP.  You need to start over!”  It could’ve been great.  Some of my favorite films are from Shyamalan (Signs, Unbreakable….and, of course, The Sixth Sense).  I do have confidence that Shyamalan will crawl out of this hole that he’s dug himself into.  But this film was really, really bad.

The whole family really loved this movie.  The trailers make it seem oh so silly—but the film has a wonderful message.  The animation is terrific – especially the Panda’s facial expressions (Jack Black is terrific).  You don’t have to be a kid – or take a child with you – to enjoy this movie.  See it on the BIG SCREEN, folks!

The trailers for this movie make it seem so utterly asinine.  My daughter wanted to go – so we went.  What a refreshing surprise.  It’s not art—but it is entertaining!   There’s a real story here – with real character development.  Wonderful supporting roles are played by Steve Martin, Greg Kinnear, Romany Malco and Sigourney Weaver.  This would make a PERFECT rental.  Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Dax Shepard are terrific.
