2008 Movie Log
The Tale of Despereaux
Very well-made film—excellent animation and voice talent. See it on the big screen.

This film was beautifully & impeccably made. Very poignant. Incredible special effects (Benjamin’s character). It was 30-45 minutes too long—and it could have EASILY been edited down without losing anything of importance. I’m still chewing on the ending. Hannah has an unusual interpretation of the ending which I would share here but it would be a big spoiler—and since so many thousands of movie fans salivate to read my blog entries, it just wouldn’t be fair.

Hannah, Helen and I saw this at the cheapy $1.50 theater today…..and it was TERRIFIC! Witty, clever dialog. Awesome characters & story—from Sparx Animation (which we had never even heard of). We loved this movie and highly recommend.
Nothing Like the Holidays
Only John Leguizamo kept this from a 1-star rating. This movie had great heart—but it just couldn’t quite get where it wanted to go. The sibling rivalries, the parental strife, the thug-with-a-heart-of gold, the wanta-be-movie star, the troubled soldier—it all seemed so forced & rehearsed to death. I didn’t really care what happened to the characters….and that’s the death knell to any film. Two exceptions—I did care about Mauricio (John Leguizamo) because his character seemed real (that’s what great acting can do—bring a cliche to life); and Jesse, just back from 3 years in Iraq. Maybe I only cared about Jesse because of his extremely interesting facial scars. The make-up dude did a great job. Debra Messing should keep with upbeat physical comedy—she’s a real drag as an over-achieving, uptight hedge fund executive. Save your money and wait for the DVD.
Slumdog Millionnaire
This is a must-see on the big screen. Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of Jamal Malik, an orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who desperately wants to find (and keep) his lost childhood love, Latika. Jamal’s amazing backstory is revealed in visually stunning flashbacks while he is a contestant on the wildly popular Hindi version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionnaire.” Unlike most contestants, Jamal isn’t there for the money. Awesome soundtrack (stay for the credits). The film makes you think—How do we know what we know? How do we pluck into consciousness the little pieces of information we keep tucked away inside the ba-zillion file drawers of our brains? And how do these little pieces come together to form our histories and our possibly our destinies? Great, great movie. Directed by Danny Boyle (Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions…….)

As Phil Hartman would say, this film “exuded adequacity.” It was adequate. But definitely wait for the DVD—save your $9. Jaden Smith is a fine young actor and should have a long career.

Totally caught off-guard by the wonderful-ness of this animated film. One of those rare animated movies that are equally entertaining to adults & kids. Go see it on the big screen! 3-D films tend to make me nauseated & I avoid them—but I had no problem with this one.
